Things to do

Bridge views, river days, trails, and town

Start at Canyon Rim, choose one trail or guided river trip, and return to Fayetteville for the restaurants and storefronts that distinguish this gateway town from a park entrance.

Canyon Rim Visitor Center

See the park film and exhibits, then follow the short boardwalk to the bridge overlooks. The visitor center fits families, limited time, and days when rain rules out a longer rim trail.

Long Point Trail

The 3.2-mile round trip ends at an unprotected rock ledge facing the bridge. Check current NPS conditions and parking guidance before leaving town.

Endless Wall Trail

This 2.4-mile point-to-point route crosses Fern Creek before reaching Diamond Point and other cliff overlooks. Fern Creek parking is small, roadside parking is prohibited, and finishing the route adds a half-mile road return.

Guided New River rafting

The Upper New mixes pools with rapids through Class III; the Lower Gorge includes Class III–V water. Choose a licensed commercial outfitter and match the river section to the least experienced paddler.

New River Gorge climbing

The gorge is a serious sandstone climbing destination, not a casual roadside scramble. First-time visitors should go with a qualified guide and review park rules, closures, and access before choosing a crag.

Downtown Fayetteville

Return to Court Street and the surrounding blocks for coffee, outfitter shops, independent restaurants, and a compact walk after the gorge. On a rainy afternoon, these blocks are an alternative to exposed overlooks.

Bridge Day

On the third Saturday in October, pedestrians, BASE jumpers, vendors, shuttles, and event rules replace ordinary bridge traffic. Book lodging early and read the current event notice before arrival.
