Weekend itinerary

A Fayetteville weekend above and below the gorge

See the bridge on Friday, give Saturday to one trail or a guided New River trip, and finish with downtown dinner and a short Sunday overlook.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

A Fayetteville weekend moves from bridge overlook to one substantial outdoor day, then back to town for dinner and a cabin or hotel night.

Best length

2 nights

Two nights fit a Friday bridge introduction, one substantial Saturday outing, and an unhurried Sunday departure.

Stay

Comfort Inn New River

A chain-hotel option in the Oak Hill area, south of downtown Fayetteville, for travelers who value familiar…

Main activity

New River Gorge

Canyon Rim introduces the gorge; use Saturday for one trail or one licensed commercial river trip.

Trip shape

One trail or one river day

Good for first-time visitors who want the gorge without squeezing rafting and two rim hikes into the same Saturday.

A forested section of the Endless Wall Trail
Endless Wall combines a forest approach, exposed rim viewpoints, and a point-to-point route with a road return.
Trail gear on the porch of a contextual Appalachian cabin
Cabin stays trade downtown walkability for wooded space and an easy place to leave wet trail or river gear.
A raft, paddles, and personal flotation devices beside a gorge river
A licensed commercial New River trip requires an outfitter check-in and usually occupies most of Saturday.

Friday

Canyon Rim and a Court Street dinner.

Check in, visit Canyon Rim if daylight and conditions allow, and return to town for dinner rather than adding a trail after the drive.

Saturday

A rim trail or a commercial New River trip.

Choose Long Point, Endless Wall, or rafting for Saturday; do not stack a river trip and a rim hike into the same day.

10:00 AM

Main activity

Long Point, Endless Wall, or rafting.

A commercial river trip occupies most of the day. Long Point adds the bridge-facing rock ledge, while Endless Wall adds Fern Creek, Diamond Point, exposed rim, and a point-to-point finish. Check current NPS conditions before either hike.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return for dry clothes before dinner.

After rafting or a rim hike, head back to the lodging, then walk or drive into Fayetteville for dinner.

Sunday

Wood Iron breakfast and Canyon Rim.

Return to Canyon Rim if Friday was late, or take a short downtown walk before checkout and the drive out.
