Rafting on the New River below the gorge

Trip blueprint

Raft the New, then let the bridge explain the town

Fayetteville’s loudest weekends come from the gorge itself: rafts punching through New River waves below sandstone walls, and each October the rare morning when the bridge becomes a civic stage.

Choose the river day before the rest of the weekend

Rafting is not a decorative add-on here. For many visitors it is the reason to come, and the right trip depends on season, water level, group confidence, and whether the goal is a family introduction or a bigger Lower New day.

Bridge Day is different. The annual October event centers on the New River Gorge Bridge, with BASE jumping, vendors, road closures, shuttles, and a festival atmosphere that makes Fayetteville busier than a normal fall weekend. Lodging should be handled early, and the official event site should be checked before committing to timing.

How to avoid the two common mistakes

  • Do not book the most intense rafting trip just because it sounds iconic. Match the run to the least experienced person in the group.
  • Do not treat Bridge Day like a normal overlook stop. Plan parking, shuttles, road closures, layers, and a slower meal afterward.
  • Use Fayetteville for the evening if you can. The town is part of the payoff after a wet river day or a crowded bridge morning.

River decision cue

Pick the river intensity before the weekend fills in.

Rafting season, group confidence, Bridge Day closures, shuttles, and parking all change the right lodging choice. Let Fayetteville carry the meal and town reset after the river or bridge morning.
